Abstract

This paper provides theory and design of a cognitive engine, the enabling technology of cognitive radio. A cognitive radio is a wireless communications device which is able to sense the environment and makes decisions on how to use the available radio resources to enable communications with a certain quality of service. With cognitive engine platform easy development of new components and algorithms is possible to improve the cognitive radio capabilities. This platform can easily be used on a simulation system andthen moved to a real wireless system. The paper provides the foundation for the analysis of wireless systems in this respect, and through this, methods and contemplations for future developments. The theorywork also investigates the use of learning to enhance the cognitive engine'scapabilities through feed-back, learning, and knowledge representation.
