MPLS is a technique used in highperformance telecommunication networking that transmits data from one network node to the another node using short path labels instead of long network addresses, reducing complexity in lookups routing table. The labels identify virtual paths present between different nodes rather than endpoints. MPLS encapsulate packets of various network protocols. MPLS supports many technologies such as Frame Relay, ATM. When the primary path or node is failed then packets are not transmitted further and there is problem of packet delay and packet loss in these networks. In present work we proposed an algorithm based on backup paths in order to improve network performance. The performance is evaluated in terms packet delay, number of expected packets and number of packet loss. Proposed algorithm is implemented in NS-2 and simulation results have been provided to illustrate the efficiency of the proposed algorithm.
