Abstract

Concrete Filled Steel Tubes (CFST) comprises of steel hollow section of circular or rectangular or square shape filled with plain or reinforced concrete. The inherent buckling problem related to thin walled steel tubes is either prevented or delayed due to the presence of concrete core. CFST suffers from the problem of heavy dead load as it has both steel and concrete. Thus it was studied to reduce the density of concrete by using mixed aggregate (a combination of brick aggregate and stone aggregate) that may improve the strength and stiffness of concrete in comparison with those of purely brick aggregate concrete. Brick aggregates are generally brick bats, that are slightly over burnt bricks mostly left as waste. The replacement of stone aggregate with brick bats are made as 5%, 10%, 15%, 20% and 25% and the curing of CFST are made for 7days and 28days. The properties of concrete such as compressive strength, youngs modulus and also the load carrying capacity of CFST were tested. The result showed the increase in strength for 5%, 10% and 15% whereas decreases for 20% and 25%.
