Abstract

The paper attempts to provide an overview of Value Analysis (VA)-which is a formal management programme implemented in close cooperation and coordination with various departments in the organisation in order to achieve cost reduction using different techniques of evaluation and study keeping the functional requirements of the given product intact, without compromising in any way its performance level. VA process ensures user satisfaction combined with cost reduction causing improved profitability to the organisation. This paper applied Value Analysis (VA) process to identify the critical elements of the mechanical face seal. Existing seal joint is carefully reviewed in the light of failure and its causes and consequential impact, direct and indirect, in the day to day working of the plant. The paper relies on Functional Analysis System Technique (FAST) for establishing the result. The modifications and redesign are suggested to improve the performance level and decrease failure probability. In conclusion cost comparison is carried out and the cost saving is tabulated.
