Agriculture is the main occupation in India, engaging her almost 65% of population and contributing about 15% to its G.D.P. It is still known as a ‘mode of subsistence. Sustainable development in the agricultural sector aims to increase the productivity, efficiency and level of employment. It also aims at protecting and preserving the natural resources by not over exploiting them. The pattern of development and trends in productivity have been analysed to find whether Indian agriculture meets the requirements of sustainable development. The paper aims to study the significance of the sustainable development in the field of agriculture by using the secondary data.
