To study the influence of alcoholism among construction labourers in Tiruchirappalli city, Tamil Nadu.
This study is an exploratory study. 100 construction labourers were selected through Proportionate Cluster Random Sampling Method. Interview Schedule was the tool used to collect the primary data. Percentage, ttest, Chi Square And One Way Anova were used to analyse the data with the help of the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS).
Based on the response, 52 per cent of the respondents drink alcohol atleast two times a day in weekends. 58 per cent of the respondents purchase in black market during the alcohol dry days. 48 percent of the respondents drink alcohol 180ml (i.e., quarter). There is statistically no significant difference between groups as determined by one-way ANOVA (F=0.786, p = 0.504>0.05). There is statistically significant difference between groups as determined by one-way ANOVA (F=5.373, p =0.023<0.05). Statistically there is a significant difference between groups as determined by one-way ANOVA (F= 5.114, p= 0.047>0.05).
In Tamil Nadu illicit liquors is banned but still these types of liquors are available. For a large number of poor people, alcohol may be initially a means of coping with deprivation, poverty and harsh realities of life. It is sad to note that alcohol-related health, family and social problems are on the rise in India.
