Performance Analysis of MAC Protocols in WLAN and Cellular Network

Medium Access Control (MAC) protocols play an essential role in wireless communication networks. MAC allows several users simultaneously to share a communication channel in order to achieve maximum of channel utilization with minimum of interference and collisions. In this paper, MAC protocols used in Wireless Local Area Network and Cellular Network, importance of Binary Exponential Back-off algorithm in MAC protocols, comparison of Wired and Wireless networks are discussed. It is observed that by using Binary Exponential Back-off algorithm, by increasing no. of collisions automatically the backoff time increases which avoids the congestion.
