Abstract

One of the unavoidable consequences of using automobiles is that from time to time accidents will cause damage to it. Over the years, many new materials have been introduced to the car body. A bumper is a structure attached to the front and rear of an automobile that covers the chassis. The bumper and the chassis are the two components that take most of the impact force in collision conditions. In this work, the bumper along with the chassis of a Tata Indica car has been modeled using Pro-E software. The model is then imported to Ansys workbench for impact analysis using different materials namely Aluminium alloy (6061), stainless steel, structural steel and carbon epoxy 2 and total deformation is observed. The strength of the component is determined by identifying the segment or part that the crack will occur or where the concentration of stress is high when force is attached in front of the component. The impact analysis under static loading shows that carbon epoxy 2 material is more reliable for car bumper as it is producing low deformation and has low mass compared to other materials used.
