Abstract

On day-to-day basis street lights consume huge amounts of power through the night-time. However in many places like housing areas the street lights are not required all through the night-time because of scant movement in such areas. Hence in areas like these and also in general in areas where there is limited movement in the late night, the street lights waste lot of power. As energy consumption is an issue of growing attention, possible energy savings in public street lighting systems are recently discussed viewpoints. The purpose of this work is to describe the Smart Street Lighting system, an approach to attain the demand for flexible public lighting systems using a Programmable Logic controller (PLC). The main difference from other processors is that PLCs are armored for severe conditions such as dust, moisture, heat, cold etc., and have the capability for extensive input/output (I/O) arrangements. Proposal of smart street lightning system does not only achieve energy saving but also extends the service life of street light gear.
