Purpose is to project Direct Reduced Iron or Sponge iron as a suitable alternative to steel scraps during steel melting process and utilising this fact to enhance growth of automotive component manufacturing industries in the state
The manufacturing of Sponge Iron is studied in detail. The raw materials, their characteristics, suitability of Odisha based raw materials. Samples of Thermex TMT Bars are subjected to heat treatment process and tested for wear & tear. Its microstructure is studied and what properties support its selection as an alternative to steel scraps during steel melting and whether such steels will be suitable for manufacturing of automotive components is realised.
The microstructure was found to be Pearlitic thus making it suitable for forming and forging operations widely used in component manufacturing
Odisha has an advantage in setting up integrated D.R.I plants having casting, forging units where automotive components can be manufactured thus giving rise to jobs and employment while reducing energy costs.
