Abstract

Children are made to memorize theorems and equations, instead of having conceptual knowledge and foundation. This makes the subject boring and irrelevant to the students. The high amount of students with low interest in mathematics is also a warning sign for educators to the problems regarding the countries future, where the demand for highly skilled engineers and scientists will grow more and more. Students’ attitude towards mathematics has been a factor that is known to influence students’ achievement in mathematics. The purpose of this study is to find out the students attitude towards mathematics and find out gender difference in attitude towards mathematics in a selected school of Aizawl, Mizoram. A total of 100 high school students were administered with a questionnaire to find out their attitudes towards mathematics. The students answered questions regarding their personal confidence to mathematics and perceived usefulness of mathematics. The findings of the study are the students of Science showed more interest in mathematics, which was quiet obvious. However, it the high number of students with low interest was unexpected, and this experiment is a strong proof of the fact that the education standard in terms of mathematics is still very poor in Mizoram.
