Abstract

The effects of climate change globally and especially in Nigeria, are tending towards critical state. The persistent and untimely climatic changes like drought, delayed rainfall, flood, heat waves, etc are abnormalities associated with disorders in the climatic regime globally. This adverse effects lead to several illnesses and premature mortality and significant retardation of economic growth and development of any nation. The need to tackle climate change has therefore become imperative and has become a priority for the whole world at large. This paper therefore focuses on the opportunities and challenges associated with adopting renewable energy into the greenhouse gas emission reduction programmes. The paper provides background issues and example programmes on the utilization of renewable energy as a climate change reduction strategy. It also enumerates a number of barriers associated with this programme and possible recommendations for control and elimination of barriers.
