Abstract

The aim of the study was to isolate the PHB producing strains from soil sample. Fifty isolates were collected from 3 different zones in and around Coimbatore district about 18 isolates were collected from Western Ghats near Madukkarai, Coimbatore district. About 20 isolates were collected from Agro waste storage compost at Kulathupalayam, Coimbatore district. About 12 isolates were collected from Agriculture University, Coimbatore. The effective PHB producing strains were screened out by qualitative and quantitative screening methods. The cheap substrates such as paper mill effluent and diary effluent are utilized for the PHB production. The higher concentrations of effluent yield the higher production rate.
