Abstract

Photocatalytic disinfection of indicator microorganisms is a promising technology that has been up coming in recent years. In this study, photocatalytic silver loaded titanium dioxide nanoparticles (nAg/TiO2) were investigated for its capability of disinfecting Escherichia coli in aqueous media. The four different ratios of Ag loaded TiO2 (1:20, 1:50, 1:100 and 1:200) were prepared by sol gel technique. The characterization of nanocomposites by XRD, FESEM and EDAX showed that the particles were spherical with approximately 100nm size. Ag/TiO2 nanoparticle at 1:50 molar ratio was efficiently disinfecting 4.8x108 CFU/ml E. coli within 60 min. The total cell damage was observed in SEM image.
