Determination of important heavy and transition metals in the surface water of the river Ganges by ion chromatography

Abstract

The toxicity and accumulative behaviour of trace elements is well documented owing to its ecological significance. The pollution of the river Ganga is due to the discharge of untreated sewage, industrial effluents, pesticides and insecticides used by the farmers. The objective of our study was to identify and quantify the presence of various metal ions in water samples collected from 2740 Km long flow of the river Ganges taking in to consideration both Himalayan origin(Bhagirathi and Devprayag), the higher portion of flow (Brijghat) and the most industrialised(Kanpur) and populated(Varanasi and Patna)region. This paper describes the determination of heavy and transition metals like Pb(II), Cd(II), Fe(III), Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II) and Zn(II) called water samples by ion chromatography supplemented with sample pre-treatment to overcome the dissolved organic matter.
