Abstract

Cervical cancer is a form of cancer that affects the cells of the cervix, the lower part of the uterus that connects to the vagina. It is caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV), a virus that is generally transmitted through sexual contact. The body’s immune system is known to prevent the HPV virus from causing any severe harm. However, the virus can survive for many years, and in some women, it can cause cells of the cervix to become cancerous. In India, cervical cancer occupies a formidable share of the total cancer cases in women.
