A Study on Diaphysioepiphyseal Union among the Children of Hyderabad, Telangana State

The aim of the present study was to estimate the age only from one joint i.e. the elbow joint of the school going children between the ages of 10–18 years. Age of either the victim or the accused has acquired a level magnanimosity either for the prosecution or for the defense. In these cases, depending on the age of the accused or victim the entire legal procedure may be influenced at the time of filling the charge sheet, or at the time of pronouncing the judgment and while awarding the quantum of punishment, if the accused is found guilty.

The materials for this study were school children and college students numbering 100 (50 Boys and 50 Girls) form a local government and private high school of Medak District and Hyderabad city. The student falling within the age group of 10–18 years has been selected. The school children were picked up from 5^th to10^th standards, which have been falling in the age of 10–15 years, likewise college students were picked up in the age group of 16–18 years.

The study of the epiphyseal union in the lower end of humerus, upper ends of Ulna and radius (elbow Joint) shows that the ossification centers at elbow joint fuses at 14 to 16 years of age in males and a little earlier in females.

The epiphyseal union around the elbow joint can be used for age estimation among the adolescents between the ages of 14–16 years both for the females and males. The study of epiphyseal union gives only a marginal error of ± 6 months of age both for the females and males.
