The burning topic in India is burn deaths of young newly married females for demand of dowry and due to domestic violence. It is mandatory in India to perform Medico Legal autopsies for all unnatural deaths. The aim of the study is to analyze the various epidemiological and medico-legal aspects in the community which will help to plan the preventive programme for reducing the incidence of fatal burns.
A thorough examination of postmortem aspects was done. Details pertaining to age groups, religion, socioeconomic status, marital status of the victims, the place and time of occurrence, involvement of body surface area in burns, survival period, cause and nature of deaths, etc. were studied and analyzed.
Out of 48 female burn victims, most of the members were in the age group of 21–30 years followed by 10–20 years. Majority of the female burn victims were affected by 71–80% burns, was 14 (29.1%) members. Accidental death was observed as a mode of death predominantly among 26 (54.1%) out of 48 female burns deaths. 22.9% septicaemic shock is the predominant cause of death.
There is a necessity to increase awareness among communities regarding fire safety precautions especially during domestic affairs. Government has to make policies strictly against dowry deaths and domestic violence.
