Integrating Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis into HIV-AIDS Programme Management

Abstract

The global HIV-AIDS epidemic has grown and continues to grow to alarming rates. The rate of new infections continues to soar in developing nations1. A combination of prevention initiatives is needed to halt its spread. Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is a daily course of antiretroviral drugs (ARVs) taken by HIV-negative people to protect themselves from infection5. Clinical data thus far has shown that PrEP reduces the chances of HIV infection to near-zero. PrEP is cost effective, and there is growing demand for it from people at higher risk of HIV-AIDS infection, but the scale and coverage remains extremely limited. This paper reviews the current landscape of integrating Pre-exposure prophylaxis in HIV-AIDS programmes and proposes smart practices toward optimal patient management.
