There is abundant use of chemicals in the environment for increasing the productivity and growth of crops which leads to million cases of pesticide poisoning every year. Pesticides mainly inhibit cholinesterase enzyme which results in excess accumulation of acetylcholine resulting in severe problems in nervous, reproductive, immune and endocrine systems in addition to various chronic diseases like cancer.
To assess extent of derangement of inhibition of cholinesterase enzyme in pesticide sprayers of Satara District.
In present study, 40 pesticide sprayers with age group of25-35 years were selected as subjects. 40 healthy farmers of same age, not involved in spraying activity were taken as control group. A detail history and anthropometric measurements of both groups were taken. Blood sample was collected in plain bulb and serum was separated out for the analysis of cholinesterase by DGKC method. To find out significance level, comparison of mean and SD of both groups was done by using Unpaired t test.
There was highly significant decrease in serum AChE(P value < 0.0001) among pesticide sprayers as compared to control group.
To create awareness in pesticide sprayers, about hazardous effect of pesticides was main goal of the study.
