Elastofibroma Dorsi: A Rare Soft Tissue Tumor Detected Incidentally on Autopsy

Elastoûbroma dorsi is an uncommon benign soft tissue tumor usually located in the infra-scapular region, deep to serratus anterior muscle, and often attached to the periosteum of the ribs, presenting with long history of swelling and occasionally pain and discomfort. It is seen in elderly age group and may be mistaken for a malignant soft tissue tumor due to its size and location. The pathogenesis of the lesion is still unclear, but repetitive microtrauma by friction between the scapula and the thoracic wall may cause the reactive hyperproliferation of fibroelastic tissue. Diagnosis is straight-forward when the lesion is present in characterstic anatomic location and pathognomonic histopathological features are seen. We describe a case of bilateral elastofibroma dorsi detected incidentally on autopsy.
