Study on constraints faced by farmers in adoption of kitchen gardening in central plain zone of Punjab

The present study was conducted in three districts of Punjab viz Jalandhar, Nawanshehar and Kapurthala. The data were collected from ninety respondents through personal interview method with the help of structured schedule. The input constraints in Nawanshehar mainly included unavailability of quality seeds/nursery whereas in Jalandhar non-availability of pesticides, farmyard manure and seeds in small packets was the major constraint. In both Jalandhar and Nawanshehar the technical constraints were lack of knowledge about recommended seed rate, varieties and major insect pests and diseases identification. Likewise in district Kapurthala lack of knowledge regarding available literature, recommended varieties and seed treatment were major technical constraints. In socio-cultural constraints lack of interest among rural youth in agriculture was major constraint in all the three districts whereas among general constraints lesser priority to kitchen gardening than other farm activities was the major one in Jalandhar and Nawanshehar districts. Overall socio-cultural constraints were major in Jalandhar, input constraints in Nawanshehar and general constraints in Kapurthala.
