Abstract

The present study was conducted to assess the level of antibiotic resistance against common aminoglycoside antibiotics (Gentamicin, kanamycin and amikacin), in bacterial species isolated from open wounds of domestic animals. Out of 200 isolates of different bacterial species, 179 isolates were subjected to antibiotic sensitivity tests for gentamicin and kanamycin and 181 isolates for amikacin. Irrespective of species only 41.44%, 30.73% and 11.17% bacterial isolates were found sensitive to amikacin, gentamicin and kanamycin, respectively, and rest were intermediate to completely resistant to these antibiotics. Thus, among the three antibiotics the highest number of bacteria were found resistant to kanamycin followed in decreasing order by gentamicin and amikacin. Among the common bacterial species isolated during the study, Pseudomonas aeruginosa showed greatest resistance to the three aminoglycoside antibiotics. It was concluded that aminoglycoside antibiotics should be used carefully and judiciously under field conditions as they are ineffective against most of the bacterial isolates of veterinary clinical importance.
