Abstract

The study was conducted to detect the presence of Oestrus ovis larvae in goats of local breed. The goats having clinical signs like blocked nostrils, mucoid and mucopurulent discharge, sneezing were selected for examination. The heads of slaughtered animals were separated from the bodies, incised sagitally and were examined for the presence of larvae in major sites such as nasal cavities, nasal septum, conchae and horn core. A total of 247 animals were examined, of which 194 animals found positive for the larvae of Oestrus ovis. The overall rate of infection was recorded as 78.54%. The total number of larvae were counted in each animal with an average 8.90 larvae per animal. Among different sites of larval collection, highest percentage of larvae were collected from nasal passages (56.71%), followed by anterior part of frontal sinuses (36.90%) and lowest in posterior part of frontal sinuses (6.30%).
