Abstract

Sixty local cows (2 to 7 years old) from four villages of Bhadrak district were selected and divided into three groups of 20 each on the basis of their reproductive status i.e. normal cyclic cows, anoestrus cows and repeat breeding cows. The mean serum calcium and phosphorus levels of anoestrus (6.19 ±0.29 and 3.72 ±0.16 mg/dl) and repeat breeder cows (6.93 ±0.38 and 4.15 ±0.30 mg/dl) were significantly (P<0.05) lower than that of normal cyclic cows (8.46 ±0.26 and 5.80 ±0.26 mg/dl). The mean serum zinc content of anoestrus cows (0.76 ±0.07 ppm) was significantly (P<0.05) lower than the other two groups. The mean serum manganese levels of animals of all the groups were observed to be above the critical level (0.2 ppm). The mean serum iron content of cows of all the groups was found much above the critical level (1.0 ppm). The mean serum protein level of animals of all the groups differed significantly (P<0.05) from each other and the higher serum protein level was observed in normal cyclic animals (6.48 ±0.23 g/dl). The mean serum glucose content of cows of normal cyclic group (54.13 ±3.09 mg/dl) was significantly (P<0.05) higher than that of other two groups (34.81 ±1.38 and 41.76 ±3.33 mg/dl). The mean serum cholesterol content of normal cyclic cows (65.31 ±5.58 mg/dl) was observed to be significantly (P<0.05) higher than the other two groups.
