Abstract

Social isolation can be defined as an absence of interaction, contact, and relationship with family and friends of a person on an individual level, with neighbours on a broader scale, and with society on a large scale. This study sought to explore the impact of social isolation among the elderly at different levels. A total respondent of 100 elderly was selected by using a multistage random sampling technique from various locations of Lucknow city (U.P), divided into three age groups 65–70 years, 70–75 years, and above 75 years. Information was collected using a demographic profile sheet and a Loneliness scale UCLA developed by (Russell, et al., 1978). Results of the study revealed that loneliness was found to have a deterministic relationship with gender where male respondents exhibited more loneliness in comparison to female elderly.
