Abstract

The purpose of this qualitative study was to find out the reasons behind the relocation of the elderly to the Old Age Homes (OAHs). Twenty elderly inmates (both males andfemales), aged between 61 to 86 years, residing in the sampled OAHs of Varanasi, were interviewed individually The findings revealed that the elderly shifted to OAHs because of misfortune, death of a spouse, familial discord, loneliness, economic hardship, etc. The respondents revealed that their movement to OAH in Varanasi was involuntary and not happened out of their volition. The inmates considered it their misfortune (past karmas) that they are forced to spend the last days of their lives in OAHs rather than with their families
