Anxiety about ageing: A comparative study between young and middle adults

Abstract

Anxiety about ageing refers to worries and anticipation of getting old The study aimed to find out the levels and differences in anxiety about ageing in 209 young and middle adults, ages varying from 25 to 59 years of both sexes. The anxiety about Ageing Scale (AAS) by Lasher and F aulkender (I 993) was used to measure anxiety in the subjects of this study. Microsoft Excel and SP SS software were used to calculate and compare the level of anxiety. The findings of this study revealed that young adults had a higher level of anxiety about ageing, females in the young adult age group had a higher level of anxiety, in case of middle adults and males had a higher level of anxiety about ageing and in total, females had a higher level of anxiety about ageing. In the case of subdomains, middle adults had a higher level of anxiety in the domain of Fear of Old People and Fear of Loss, young adults had a higher level of anxiety in the domain of Psychological Concerns and Physical Appearance. Overall, the study concluded that the help of awareness of the facts of ageing and how to deal with the problems related to ageing can help to improve anxiety in people.
