Abstract

A genetic analysis of fruit colour distribution has been made in two commercial varieties of tomato—Sioux and Improved Meeruti. It has been found that a single gene difference accounts for the green stem-end condition in the fruits of Meeruti in contrast to the uniform distribution of Sioux. It has been further found that the green stem-end phenotype determined primarily by the dominant allele of this gene, is affected, in its intensity, by a number of modifying factors. Evidence has been presented which indicates that these factors operate through an inter-chromosomal component of genetic determination and probably take the form of pleiotropically acting major genes.
