A quantitative study of yielding ability in pearl millet (grain yield data) was undertaken. The data in respect of 15 F1 hybrids (including reciprocals) were analysed for heterotic effects within and between the different groups of hybrids. Lack of positive heterosis in all combinations except one indicated that absence of coadapted gene complexes and unfavourable genotype-environmental interactions could be potent barriers for improvement even in a cross-pollinated crop. The results show the desirability of using improved material from Ghana as a tester in future work. The effects due to heterosis and combining ability are discussed for their breeding implications.
