Abstract

The inheritance of certain marker characters in three umbelliferous crops has been studied. Using these monogenically inherited markers, the extent and randomness of cross-pollination have been estimated. Cross-pollination is quite high in fennel and ajowan and about 50 per cent. in coriander. In all these crops, cross-pollination takes place at random. The need for avoiding inbreeding in crops in which appreciable amount of both self-pollination and cross-pollination occur has been pointed out and the suitability of these material for polycross breeding has been discussed.
