The nature of inheritance of genes controlling glabrousness, normal hairiness and fuzziness of the fertile glumes in rice has been reported, based on the data available from three cross combinations. A gene at gl locus controls glabrousness (vs. hairiness) in fertile glumes. This gene has also pleiotropic effect on the expression of glabrousness in the leaf blade.
Fuzziness in the glumes is due to the action of a pair of genes Fg which expresses only in the presence of the gene Gl (for normal hairiness). The gene Fg is epistatic to Gl. Probably, the gene Fg is not the same as the gene Hg reported by Nagao, Takahashi and Kinoshita (1960).
