Meiosis in Capsicum frutescens var. baccatum has been described in detail. It exhibits a number of meiotic features that have a bearing on the sexual reproduction and on viability of the seedlings. The occurrence of meiotic aberrations usually associated with hybrids seems to imply that hybridity has played an important part in the formation of the species.
