Breeding behaviour, morphology, geographical distribution and ecology of Indian collections of O. sativa complex were studied. It was concluded that there are three distinct types which hybridize and produce further intergrades in nature. This observation goes in support of Chatterjee (1948) who recognized three distinct species, viz., a perennial wild, an annual wild and an annual cultivated species within this group in Asia.
