Considerable variation in the protein content of grains could be induced in the bread wheat variety N.P. 824 by treatment with X-radiation. After three years’ selection by chemical and statistical analysis, two ‘ high protein ‘ lines could be isolated out of which one showed a significant rise in protein content over the control. Scope exists for altering the protein content in grains without any coincident change in yield or morphological characters.
