The culm anatomy of morphological mutants of barley has been analyzed at the tissue level. The macromutants differ in the cross sectional area of the culm and the cellular material, the number of cell layers, the proportion of sclerenchyma to parenchyma and the number of vascular bundles. Only quantitative differences have been found. No general relationship seems to exist between the anatomical characters used and the mechanical strength of the culm.
