It was found from three field trials with 13 wheat cultivars carried out simultaneously with and without irrigation that the ears of tillers contributed much less to grain yield under the latter condition and in fact the plant population consisted chiefly of main shoots. The correlation between the grain yields of the main axes (of the 13 cultivars) from the irrigated treatment and unit area yields under non-irrigated condition was consistently significant and larger than that between the unit area yields from the two treatments. It is suggested that selection for non-irrigated cultivation can be conveniently made on the basis of main axis yields of genotypes raised under controlled water and nutrient supply.
