A comparison of the spectrum and frequency of mutations induced by gamma rays and ethyl methane sulphonate in Sonora 64, a hexaploid spring dwarf wheat, is presented. It is found that EMS is capable of inducing a wide range of mutations with a higher frequency. The probable mode of action of EMS is discussed. It is suggested that in polyploid crops, chemical mutagens like EMS may prove more advantageous than physical mutagens for the induction of qualitative changes.
