The internode patterns of varieties and hybrids of sorghum species were analysed using the ideograph technique. Seven internode patterns were recognized depending upon the lengths of the successive internodes from the base. A few varieties exhibited only one growth phase, e.g., accelerated growth while others exhibited a combination of two or three growth phases, e.g. accelerated, uniform and retarded growth. Varieties differed in the presen of one or more growth phases and their sequence. Internode patterns con be used as additional characters for classification of plants. The type of growth phase seems to have a bearing on the disposition of leaves.
