The grain colour in pearl millet is dependent on endosperm and pericarp colours. The inheritance studies showed that the deep yellow, amber, deep slate and light slate endosperm colours were conditioned by a multiple allelomorphic series exhibiting dominance in the descending order. These endosperm colours were apparent in the presence of colourless pericarp only. The purple pericarp was dominant over the colourless pericarp and the two were differentiated by a single genetic factor which was transmitted independently from the locus for endosperm colour. The genes controlling the endosperm colours were designated as Y, Ya, Yds, Ys and those for pericarp colours were designated as Prp and prp.
