The genotypic and phenotypic correlations between yield and five important yield contributing characters have been estimated and evaluated for their utility in selection in a collection of 30 toria populations. All the five characters except 1,000 seed weight showed positive and significant correlation with yield. A number of selection indices based on different sets of characters—number of siliquae per plant, seeds per siliqua, 1,000 seed weight and yield per plant have been given. Selection index based on three character combination i.e. seeds per siliqua, 1,000 seed weight and yield per plant was observed to be as efficient as standard index based on all the four characters. The utilization of this method of selection and its practical implication in the genetic improvement of yield in toria populations have been discussed.
