A quantitative assessment of out-crossing in sunnhemp was attempted using types fixed for contrasting seed-coat colour/seedling pigmentation sown in alternate lines keeping equal allelic frequencies in the population. The maximum likelihood estimate for out-crossing worked out to 94-2%. The deviation from 100% out-crossing expected of a supposedly self-incompatible species may be due to illegitimate self pollination, non-randomness of pollen vectors or the uneven distribution of S alleles in the populations.
