The effects of grain colour (red vs. amber) and glume colour (white vs. red) in wheat on components of yield were studied using partially isogenic pairs of populations developed from individual F2 plants heterozygous for the locus concerned. Effects of grain colour were detected on days to heading, ear length, grains per spikelet, 1000-grain weight and grain yield. The effects were not consistent over the two crosses which could be due to different evolutionary history of the alleles or different loci involved in the two crosses. The locus governing glume colour was not found to influence any of the characters studied except earliness. This association was also found due to linkage between qualitative and quantitative factors. Implications of these results in wheat breeding programmes have been discussed.
