Field Reaction to Indian Races of Leaf Rust of Wheat Lines and Varieties Having Known Genes for Resistance

A number of wheat varieties and lines with known genes for resistance to leaf rust were tested for their field resistance over a period of four years at two locations—Delhi in the North and Wellington in the South. Of all the Lr genes, Lr₉ from Transfer was found to be resistant during the entire period of the study. Other Lr genes were ineffective singly but some combinations of Lr_1,Lr₁₀, Lr_l3 and Zr₁₄ were useful. A number of wheat varieties were found to be highly resistant to leaf rust both under artificial and natural conditions of infection at Delhi and Wellington respectively.
