A number of wheat varieties and lines with known genes for resistance to leaf rust were tested for their field resistance over a period of four years at two locations—Delhi in the North and Wellington in the South. Of all the Lr genes, Lr9 from Transfer was found to be resistant during the entire period of the study. Other Lr genes were ineffective singly but some combinations of Lr1,Lr10, Lrl3 and Zr14 were useful. A number of wheat varieties were found to be highly resistant to leaf rust both under artificial and natural conditions of infection at Delhi and Wellington respectively.
