Abstract

Electron microscopic studies of early pachytene stages of nulli-5B and disomic plants of Triticum aestivum showed two types of synaptinemal complexes which differed in width. But for one type being narrower than the other, the types were similar in general appearance. Nulli-5B plants showed both the types, while the disomic plants showed mostly the broad type with two exceptions which were narrower. It is not clear whether the differences in the complexes observed in the nulli-5B plants could be attributed to the occurrence of homologous as well as homeologous pairing. Differences in”“ condensation as postulated by Upadhya and Swaminathan (1967) could account for such differences. Thus, the 5B system may influence both the timing and condensation sequences of meiosis.
