A Comparison of Mutagenic Effectiveness and Efficiency of Gamma Rays, EMS, NMU AND NG*
Abstract
The mutagenic effectiveness and efficiency of gamma rays, ethyl methane sulphonate, nitrosomethyl urea and nitrosoguanidine was compared using Triticum durum var. N.P. 404. NMU was the most effective and reasonably efficient and can be an useful mutagen under low concentrations. These results are found to be in agreement with the conclusions of Shama Rao and Sears (1964) that alkylating agents like EMS and NMU are capable of inducing functional alterations of genes in polyploid plants.
