Path coefficient analysis in a group of 58 short-statured strains of rice at Regional Rice Research Station, Kapurthala during Kharif, 1969, indicated that tiller number, spikelet number and days to maturity had appreciable direct effect on yield. It was also clear from the study that varieties which take longer time from heading to maturity are conductive to higher yield. The negative indirect effects of above three characters via each other further suggest that a compromise must be reached in a selection programme in respect of these characters.
