Abstract

Studies on genetic differentiation in tetraploid Triticum species by mutation and hybridization experiments revealed that the key characters fall into two distinct groups, one of core character, threshing habit, which showed rare recombination and mutation and the other of peripheral characters, ear density, beak length and glume shape, which recombine and mutate freely. The importance and relative contributions of such characters in evolution is discussed.
