The experience gained and data collected on rose breeding during the last decade at IARI have suggested the possibilities of directed breeding for desired objectives. The main objectives of breeding were to evolve varieties with attractive flower colour and form, suitable for growing under tropical and subtropical conditions. About 12,385 crosses in 184 combinations were attempted and 6,877 hybrid seedlings studied. The improvement has been effected through genie manipulation, chromosome engineering using aneuploidy and induced mutation. As a result of intensive breeding, 20 new cultivars, including 11 Hybrid Teas, 8 Floribundas and one Polyantha have been evolved and released for distribution.
