Abstract

The relative stability of tiller angle at two different spacings and under two fertility levels was studied in Basmati 370 and Jhona 349, two local improved tall varieties, Jaya and T(N)1, the new dwarf varieties and IR 480-5, a new introduction from the International Rice Research Institute, the Philippines. IR 480-5 and Jhona 349 had a narrow tiller angle while the others had a wide angle. The tiller angle in these varieties was markedly influenced by spacing, the angle being wider under wider spacing. This effect was not the same in all varieties. The tiller angle in Jhon 349 was greatly affected by spacings and the angle in Basmati 370 was relatively less affected. The other varieties were intermediate in this respect. Differences in manurial level had no effect on the tiller angle.
